who invented homework and why

There are two sides to the coin when it comes to homework. While students think of homework as a torture, teachers believe that it is an important part of academic life and without doing so student’s grades will suffer immensely.

This tug-of-war has been there for years now but who exactly invented this concept? Let us find out in this article.

WHO INVENTED HOMEWORK - TEACHERS POINT OF VIEWS:

Teachers and educators believe that homework is very important to learn new concepts, it is also necessary for student’s academic growth. They say it helps students practice what they learned in class, reinforces classroom learning, and ensures a student's academic growth.

Some of the major benefits, why teachers support homework are:

Good and Improved Learning

Practice

Better Clarity in Concepts

Deep Understanding

Teachers also believe that Homework allows students to develop Self-motivated learning.

WHO INVENTED HOMEWORK - STUDENTS CONCERNS:

Students argue that teachers assign too much homework. They consider it an additional burden; they say that it is something the teacher cannot finish during class time. There are some strong points raised by students in support of this view point, though there is no simple solution to resolve these conflicting opinions on homework across different stakeholders.

They have raised following concerns against homework:

Health Problems

Stress

Fear and Anxiety

It consumes a lot of time that can be spent on better activities

Extreme toughness level of assigned homework

There are a lot of other concerns and issues that can be raised against this homework category. However, there should be a critical analysis on this issue lead by all stakeholders because almost everything has merits and demerits.

WHO INVENTED HOMEWORK - EARLY HISTORY

Back in time, we see that homework was invented by Roberto Nevilis. The idea behind the invention of homework was simple: as a teacher, he felt his teachings lost their essence when they left class. Determined to change this trend and improve student performance beyond what had been achieved during school hours, he decided on assigning students home tasks or work after each lesson.

Who Invented Homework and What were the Objectives?

Reinforcement of Learning

The main objective of homework is to reinforce the learning that takes place in class. In order for students to establish a connection between lessons, it's important that they practice what they learn and are able to recall information with ease when needed.

Reflection of Time

If a teacher cannot dedicate more time to some lessons or topics, students will not be able to achieve full conceptual clarity. This is why homework was created: so that students can go back over their work and gain an understanding of the material when they do have extra time.

Practicing Approach

In addition to providing students with an opportunity for practice, homework enables them to apply their learning in real life. First of all, when there is no formal obligation such as a test or assignment that requires practicing lessons and subjects from school; students might not do it on their own accord because they don't have the motivation.

However, once homework becomes a part of the routine then more often than not students will make sure to find time after studying/during weekends so that they can keep up with what's going on at school without feeling like drowning in work which makes them feel overwhelmed before tests come around - this provides relief.

WHY IS HOMEWORK CONSIDERED WRONG NOW?

Homework has become a dreaded part of every student’s school life. This is because, not only are the sections assigned irrelevant to what was taught in class or too much for students to handle, but also due to teachers assigning homework at random times instead of following some method or timeline.

Homework originally had good intentions when it was first introduced by educators who wanted their students' learning and understanding levels increased through regular practice outside the classroom environment using methods that were different from those used during actual lessons.

However, nowadays it seems like an impossible task because the time span between classes and assignments is too short to handle.

A lot of work is mostly assigned in a very less time. Students are overburdened and don’t get even a bit of leisure time for other activities, which results in mental health problems and stress.

FINAL WORDS ABOUT HOMEWORK

Homework is a challenging part of student life. However, with online homework help, students can complete their assignments and improve grades in no time.
